Why is Delhi's air so toxic?

More than 100,000 children under the age of five die every year in India because of air pollution, according to a report released this month by Down to Earth Magazine and the Centre for Science and Environment. Remarkably, India’s noxious air is now responsible for 12.5 percent of all deaths in the country.

One of the worst affected cities is New Delhi, where somedays breathing the air is equivalent to smoking 44 cigarettes a day. In 2018, the capital city had an astonishing zero good air quality days.  “Delhi’s deadly air” is the subject of a new People and Power documentary out this month.

So why is Delhi’s air so polluted? And what’s being done to change that?

Supreme Court orders immediate release of Prashant Kanaujia

In India, the Supreme Court has ordered the release of Prashant Kanaujia on immediate bail.

The bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Ajay Rastogi told the police that Prashant's tweets can not be said right, but how can they put him in jail for this?

Court said that there can not be an agreement with the freedom of any citizen. This is from the Constitution and it can not be violated.

Jagsisha Arora, wife of Prashant Kanaujia, said after the verdict, "I am very happy and I believe in the Indian constitution. My husband has not committed any crime. I wanted to meet Prashant."

Prashant Kanaujia's lawyer Nitya Ramakrishnan said, "Supreme Court has corrected the order to release Prashant. I am happy for them."

The lawyer of Uttar Pradesh has not commented on the issue saying that the matter is still under consideration.

The matter came to the Supreme Court's holiday benches, but it was not that it was heard by the vacation bench because there were 50 people in the court room including lawyers, parties and journalists.

Such people also reached there who had no connection with this, but due to sensitivity of the case, they wanted to be present during the hearing.

In fact, Prashant Kanojia was arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police from his house on Saturday. He posted a video with a tweet about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in which a woman is talking about her love affair with Adityanath.

A policeman had lodged an FIR in the Hazratganj police station of Lucknow and the Section 66 of the IT Act and section of the Defamation (IPC 500) was imposed on Prashant. Later, Section 505 was also added.

On this case, Prashant Kanaujia's wife Jigisha Arora had filed a petition under Hebeus Corpus against the arrest in the Supreme Court.

The advocate pleading for the trial on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh Police argued that the tales of Prashant are provocative. Even earlier, their tweets were such and so Section 505 was also added.

On which Justice Indira said that we believe that such tweets should not have been written, but how is the arrest for this right?

Soon after the Supreme Court order, Prashant Kanaujia's hashtag started trending on Twitter.

Many Twitter users have welcomed the court's decision. Senior journalist Barkha Dutt has written, "The Supreme Court has ordered the release of Prashant Kanaujia on bail and said the arrest is the barrier of the freedom.''

Senior journalist MK Venu welcomed the court's decision and said that the police's accountability should be decided.

Another Twitter user Sanjukta Basu wrote, "The arrest of Prashant Kanaujia was illegal. The arrest of the former military officer in Assam was illegal. There are millions of such cases. These people get relief from the court, but this is not enough."

Following the arrest of Prashant Kanaujia, social media and journalism world started gathering support for him.

In protest of his arrest on Monday, the journalists also took out the March from the press club to the parliament.

Prashant has worked for the website 'The Wire' in the past.
