India's Longest River Bridge Near Indo-China Border to Hold 60-Tonne War Tanks

India's longest river bridge, capable of withstanding the weight of a 60-tonne battle tanks, will be inaugurated in Assam, close to the border with China on 26 May by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The construction of the bridge began in 2011 by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's UPA Government.

Now 9.15-km-long Dhola-Sadiya bridge over the Brahmaputra river will be India's longest river bridge after the inauguration. It is 3.55 km longer than the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai, making it the longest bridge in India.

The construction of the bridge is seen as an attempt by India to shore up its defence infrastructure along the Sino- Indian border. It is also part of the Centre's endeavour to improve connectivity in the region.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the strategically important bridge to the nation on 26 May. It will bolster road connectivity in the Northeast as the bridge will be used by people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh besides defence forces extensively.

The construction of the bridge began in 2011 at a project cost of Rs 950 crore by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's UPA Government. It has been designed to withstand the movement of military tanks.

Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have huge strategic value to India. Since the bridge is located close to India's border with China, it will help quick movement of military troops and artillery in times of conflict.

The bridge is located 540 km from Assam’s capital Dispur and 300 km from Arunachal Pradesh’s capital Itanagar.

The aerial distance to the Chinese border is less than 100 km.

After Kaliabhomora bridge near Tezpur, there is no bridge over the Brahmaputra for the next 375 km upstream till Dhola, where the new one has been constructed. Currently, all transportation between the two banks of the river is through water.

The bridge, when opened to public, will cut down the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by as much as four hours.

As there is no civilian airport in Arunachal Pradesh, this bridge will help people of the state reach the nearest rail head in Tinsukia and the airport in Dibrugarh easily.

The bridge is one of the key projects of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in the northeast and has been built in public-private partnership.

Scandal Exposed in ICSSR Chairperson's Appointment

The process of selecting the chairperson of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) has come out in rigging. For this, the collegium had prepared a list of prestigious individuals, one of which was to be chosen as chairperson. But the list was prepared, out of which 10 people had already died. Seven of them were such that their death had already happened before the formation of collegium.

It points to a large rigging and corruption. The question arises that this is the way to choose a chairperson in the important institution like the ICSR in the Modi Government?

According to the rules of the Indian Council of Social Science Research, the committee had to finalize the names of three of these people and send it to the government. Then, in the name of one of those three names, the Human Resource Ministry (HRD) was to be stamped.

On May 2, the Human Resource Ministry finalized the name of Brij Bihari Kumar for the post of Chairman. 76-year-old Brij Bihari Kumar has been the editor of Quarterly magazine Varta and Chintan Srijan. Now he has been made the new Chairman of the ICSR for three years.

Brij Bihari Kumar has been chosen by this process. So far, AK Thorat was made on this post which retired last month. A list of 244 names was prepared. One of which was to be chosen. This list was prepared as a chairman of Thorat.

Surprisingly, in the process of selecting the chairperson of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), ten people who had already died were included. It is a testimony to the huge rigging and corruption.

These names are: Nihar Ranjan Rai of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), who died in 1981), BR Grover (who died in 2001), KS Lal (who died in 2002), R Kulkarna (died in 2009), RS Sharma, (death in 2011), Ravinder Kumar (death in 2001) was also included in the Collegium. In addition, the name of Geographer LS Bhatt was also included in the Collegium. Who died in 2013.

Not only that, this list included the names of historian Bimal Prasad and former chief of ICSSR Rajni Kothari. Both of them died in 2015. Javed Alam was also included in the name of the person who died in 2016.

On this case, Indian Express wanted to talk to the HRD Ministry, but no answer came. A source present there called it a stupid job.

ICSSR Secretary Virendra Kumar Malhotra said that the Council was formed in 2014 and names were given at that time. He said that only 10 of the 200 names will be those who have died before. But when they were asked that why the people died in 1981 were included, they did not say anything clearly.

Commander Zakir Musa Separated from Hizbul Mujahideen

Zakir Musa, who took over the command of the terrorist organization Hizbul Mujahideen after Burhan Wani in Kashmir Valley, announced to separate from the organization on Saturday.

This move of Musa has come after his organization has overturned his statement, in which he had warned that if the Hurriyat leaders told the Kashmir case to be 'political', he would cut his head and hang him on Lal Chowk.

Musa, who took charge of the organization in July last year, has announced that after Saturday he will have no relationship with Hizbul Mujahideen.

In a new audio message released on social media, Musa said, "After my final audio message, there has been a lot of confusion in Kashmir. I remain on my statement and message."

Hizbul Mujahideen, however, said on Saturday that the organization does not keep up with Musa's statement.

Hizbul spokesman Salim Hashmi said in an e-mail statement sent to a local news agency in Kashmir, "Such a statement (Musa's) is unacceptable to us. There is a personal opinion of Zakir Musa.''

Responding to the statement of Hizbul, Musa said in the audio message, "Hizbul Mujahideen has said that there is nothing to do with the statement of Zakir Musa. Therefore, if Hizbul Mujahideen does not represent me, then I do not even represent them. Since today, there is nothing to do with Hizbul Mujahideen."

About 20-year-old Musa said that he did not say anything about any particular person or President of the Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani. He said, "I have only said against the person who is against Islam and speaks of freedom for the formation of a secular nation."

He said, "We are fighting for freedom for the sake of Islam. My blood will flow to Islam, not for a secular nation."

It is notable that in a viral audio message on social media on Friday, Zakir said, "I am warning them to all the hypocritical Hurriyat leaders. They should not interfere in our Islamic fight. If they do this, then we will cut their heads and hang them on Lal Chowk."

He said that the purpose of his fight for the implementation of Shariah in Kashmir is absolutely clear and not that he wants to solve the Kashmir issue as a political struggle.

It is believed that Hizbul Mujahideen is behind the killing of Kashmiri military officer Omar Fayaz in the beginning of this week.
