US agents tried to deport man 'because he looked Mexican'

Two US border agents have been reprimanded for trying to illegally force an injured man across the border into Mexico.

The officers made no attempt to identify him and offered no medical assistance - a violation of international treaties.

China's disgraced Sun Zhengcai stands trial for bribery

A former senior official in China who was once a major candidate for a top leadership position has been convicted on charges of corruption.

Sun Zhengcai is one of the most prominent politicians to be charged under President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption crackdown.

Zhengcai is accused of bribery and had been under investigation since last July.

Amnesty: Almost 1,000 prisoners executed worldwide in 2017

Amnesty International says 2017 saw a significant drop in the number of death sentences issued around the world.

A new report also says more African states are abolishing the death penalty altogether.

But, says Amnesty, there are still hundreds being executed worldwide without a fair trial.

Algeria: At least 257 killed in military plane crash

At least 257 people have been killed after a military plane crashed near the Boufarik airbase outside the Algerian capital, Algiers, according to Algerian state television.

The plane, an Ilyushin Il-76, which was carrying mostly soldiers, went down shortly after takeoff on Wednesday morning, state TV reported.

Algeria's defence ministry was quoted as saying that 247 passengers and 10 crew members were among the dead following the crash.

Thousands flee fighting in eastern DR Congo to Uganda

Since January, more than 70,000 people have fled fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to seek refuge in neighbouring Uganda, according to the United Nations.

Most of the new arrivals have fled fighting in the Ituri province.

Facebook's Zuckerberg tells Congress: 'It was my mistake, and I’m sorry'

Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has admitted making mistakes, as he gave nearly five hours of testimony before US Congress on Tuesday, in the first of a two-day congressional hearing into the data breach scandal that has engulfed the company.

Zuckerberg repeated apologies he previously made for a range of problems that have beset the social network - from a lack of data protection that impacted 87 million users worldwide to the platform being improperly used for political means - insisting that the company is working to prevent future malfeasance.

Rival proposals from the United States and Russia to investigate chemical weapons attacks in Syria have failed to pass at the UN Security Council.

Both sides called for new inquiries, but a US plan to assign blame was rejected by Moscow.

Rescue workers say dozens of people died in a suspected chemical attack on the town of Douma on Saturday.

Israel verifies video of sniper shooting Palestinian on Gaza border

The Israeli military has confirmed a video that shows an army sniper shooting a Palestinian during peaceful protests on the Gaza border is authentic.

Palestinians say it shows Gazans are being shot while posing no threat to soldiers.

Israel's military says the video, which was apparently shared on social media recently by an Israeli soldier, was taken in December.
