SC extends parole of Subrata Roy till April 17th

The Supreme Court on Monday extended the parole of Sahara chief Subrata Roy till April 17th and also asked the Ghaziabad development authority to deposit Rs 1100 crore to the apex court registry for acquiring land from Sahara.

Meanwhile, Sahara has filed a list of properties to the apex court which would be put to sell.

The apex court asked Sahara to deposit a substantial amount of money to the Sahara SEBI account.

One international real estate company, MG Capital holdings told the Apex court to purchase the London based New York Plaza hotel, as the company wanted to purchase Sahara stake in that hotel.

The Supreme Court asked the company to deposit an amount of Rs 750 crore to show the bona fide to purchase the hotel in New York.

The apex court fixed April 17 as the next date of hearing in the case.

The Supreme Court also asked Sahara to sell the properties and deposit a sum of Rs 5,000 crore of a substantial amount.

Subrata Roy was sent to Tihar jail on March 4, 2014, for not complying with the apex court's orders in connection with a long dispute with the market regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

The SEBI alleged that Roy allegedly failed to comply with the apex court’s order directing him to return the investors’ money.

Sahara, once among India's high-profile firms, has in the past made several failed attempts to raise the bail money using its prized overseas hotels that include the Plaza in New York and Grosvenor House in London.

Sahara says it has paid more than 80 percent of the dues to share-holders, but SEBI has disputed that and said the company has not paid more than Rs. 10,000 crores.

It would’ve been better if BJP had given tickets to Muslims, says Naqvi

It would have been better if the BJP gave tickets to Muslims for the ongoing Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said on Monday.

He added that the BJP believes in taking along all the sections of the society and the community will be adequately compensated after the party forms government in the state.

Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Uma Bharti had reportedly made similar comments earlier.

“As far as tickets are concerned, it would have been better (if tickets were given to Muslims).”

“We will address their concern by compensating them when we form government in the state,” Naqvi said, without elaborating in what ways the party will deal with the issue.

The minister said the NDA government’s performance should not be assessed in the light of the BJP not offering tickets to Muslims.

“The BJP believes in taking along all the sections of the society. We formed government at the Centre with cooperation of all. Similarly, we will form government in the state...,” he said.

Home minister and senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh had reportedly said on Thursday that Muslims should have been given tickets. Water resources minister Bharti echoed similar views on Sunday.

The BJP has not fielded even a single Muslim candidate in the state, which has sizeable Muslim population and is considered crucial in the country’s electoral politics.

The fifth round of polling is underway for 51 assembly constituencies spread across 11 districts of the state.

Nine drown as boat capsizes close to shore near Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu

At least nine tourists, including three children and five women, drowned when a fibre-reinforced plastic boat capsized about one nautical mile off the Manappad coast, near the temple town of Thiruchendur in Thoothukudi district, around 6 pm on Sunday.

Of the 9 killed, one was from Tiruchy and the others were from Azhagammanpuram in Thoothukudi district.

Sources said the boat capsized while returning to the shore and local fishermen rushed to rescue the tourists, but by then, nine of them had drowned. “Those rescued are being treated at hospitals in Thiruchendur and Thoothukudi. The exact toll will be known only after some time,” Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashwin M Kotnis told Express.

Sources said the boat capsized because of overcrowding and the rough sea. They said the fishing boat had nets heaped on one side and tourists on the other, which apparently led to the capsize. Though Manapad is an emerging tourist centre, the State Tourism Department does not operate boats for the tourists, sources said.

The deceased were identified as M Jeyaraman (42), J Muthulakshmi, A Usha Rani (35), S Murugeshwari, G Muthulakshmi (20), A Sundareswaran (7), V Surendran (10) and S Aakash (9), from Azhagammanpuram, and K Suganya (25), from Tiruchy.

Though Suganya’s husband Karthikeyan managed to rescue five persons, he was unable to save her.

Delhi High Court to hear plea against Reliance Jio's free offer

The Delhi High Court will on Monday hear a plea filed by Vodafone India alleging that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had failed to prohibit Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd's (RJIO) "blatant violation" of tariff orders, directions and regulations by permitting it to continue with its free offers.

On January 30, Vodafone India moved the Delhi High Court claiming that Trai has also failed to implement the telecom department's (DoT) circulars.

Earlier, Bharti Airtel and Idea moved the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) alleging that the regulator has been a mute spectator to the gross violations committed by Reliance Jio.

Kargil martyr's daughter gets rape threats for opposing ABVP

The Delhi University student, whose social media campaign against ABVP recently went viral, today alleged to have received "rape threats".

Lady Sri Ram College student Gurmehar Kaur, daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, said she has attracted a barrage of hate messages over her stand on the issue.

"I have been getting a lot of threats on social media. I think it is very scary when people threaten you with violence or with rape," she told NDTV.

Giving rape threats "in the name of nationalism" is not right, she added.

Her comments received widespread support including from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

"Just listen to this. THIS is BJP. They will destroy our country. Everyone must rise against their goondaism," he tweeted while sharing her statement.

After the North Campus clash, Kaur had changed her Facebook profile picture holding a placard which read "I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP".

Delhi University's Ramjas College had on Wednesday witnessed large-scale violence between members of AISA and ABVP workers. The genesis of the clash was an invite to JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid to address a seminar on 'Culture of Protests' which was withdrawn by the college authorities following opposition by the ABVP.

India’s GDP projected to 6.6 per cent post-demonetisation: IMF

India’s growth is projected to slow to 6.6 per cent in 2016-17 fiscal due to the strains that have emerged in the economy as a result of “temporary disruptions” caused by demonetisation, the IMF said today. In its annual report, however, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said demonetisation would have only short term impact on the economy and it would bounce back to its expected growth of more than eight per cent in the next few years.

The post-November 8, 2016 cash shortages and payment disruptions caused by the currency exchange initiative have undermined consumption and business activity, posing a new challenge to sustaining the growth momentum, the IMF said in its annual country report on India.

“Growth is projected to slow to 6.6 per cent in FY2016/17, then rebound to 7.2 per cent in FY2017/18, due to temporary disruptions, primarily to private consumption, caused by cash shortages,” it said.

India’s economy grew at 7.6 per cent in 2015-16.

Tailwinds from a favorable monsoon, low oil prices and continued progress in resolving supply-side bottlenecks, as well as robust consumer confidence, will support near-term growth as cash shortages ease, the IMF said.

The investment recovery is expected to remain modest and uneven across sectors, as deleveraging takes place and industrial capacity utilization picks up, the report said.

In their report, the IMF Directors supported the Indian efforts to clamp down on illicit financial flows, but noted “the strains that have emerged” from the currency exchange initiative.

“They called for action to quickly restore the availability of cash to avoid further payment disruptions and encouraged prudent monitoring of the potential side-effects of the initiative on financial stability and growth,” the report said.

Noting India’s strong economic performance of the past few years, the IMF Executive Directors commended New Delhi for its strong policy actions, including continued fiscal consolidation and an anti-inflationary monetary policy, which have underpinned macroeconomic stability.

As such, the IMF recommended continued vigilance to potential domestic and external shocks and urged the authorities to further advance economic and structural reforms to address supply bottlenecks, raise potential output, create jobs, and ensure inclusive growth.

The IMF feels that on the external side, despite the reduced imbalances and strengthened reserve buffers, the impact from global financial market volatility could be disruptive, including from US monetary policy normalization or weaker-than-expected global growth.

“In the absence of disruptive global financial volatility, slower growth in China, Europe and the United States would have only modest adverse spillovers to India, given weak trade linkages,” the IMF said.

“A key domestic risk stems from the government’s currency exchange initiative, where the near-term adverse economic impact of accompanying cash shortages remains difficult to gauge, while it may have a positive economic impact in the medium term,” the report said.

Domestic risks also flow from a potential further deterioration of corporate and public bank balance sheets, as well as setbacks in the reform process, including in GST design and implementation, which could weigh on domestic demand-driven growth and undermine investor and consumer sentiment, it added.

“On the upside, larger than expected gains from GST and further structural reforms could lead to significantly stronger growth; while a sustained period of continued-low global energy prices would also be very beneficial to India,” it said.

The IMF said progress on important economic and structural reforms over the last year has been impressive.

“Over the past year, big bang reforms, such as the legislation of a new bankruptcy code, formalisation of inflation targeting framework, and a milestone constitutional amendment enabling implementation of the pan-India Goods and Services Tax (GST), have taken place alongside continued steps implementing the gradualist reform agenda of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” it said.

Notwithstanding its majority in the lower house of the national parliament, the BJP does not have control of the upper house, thus requiring consensus building for the passage of key legislation.

As a result, securing passage of the GST constitutional amendment spanned several parliamentary sessions and entailed compromise with regional parties, it said.

The Modi Government, it said, continues to work towards enhanced inclusive growth.

“The financial inclusion agenda has broadened over the past two years, evolving from providing greater access to bank accounts and financial services to introducing more remunerative savings vehicles to diminish the luster of traditional gold-based savings,” it said.

“The government’s introduction of gold monetization schemes can boost financial intermediation by channeling domestic gold holdings to gold savings accounts, although uptake thus far has been minimal,” it added.

Shurhozelie Liezeitsu elected new Nagaland CM

The political crisis in Nagaland is heading for an end with the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) Legislature Party on Monday electing veteran leader and party president Shurhozelie Liezeitsu as its new leader in place of TR Zeliang who had quit on Sunday.

Official sources in Kohima said Shurhozelie would be sworn in as chief minister on Wednesday. Monday’s decision of the DAN legislature party – all 60 MLAs of the Nagaland House belong to DAN – also brought to an end speculations about former chief minister Neiphiu Rio returning to state politics after the resignation of chief minister TR Zeliang on Sunday.

DAN comprises of 49 NPF legislators, 4 BJP and seven Independents. Zeliang had to resign after a series of incidents rocked the state when his government wanted to hold municipal elections with 33 per cent reservation for women. Various tribal groups opposed the civic elections on the ground that certain provisions of the Nagaland Municipal Act framed under Article 243(T) of the Constitution allegedly infringed upon Naga tradition and customs as protected under Article 371(A).

Sources in Kohima said altogether 58 DAN MLAs on Monday signed in favour of the 81-year old Shurhozelie Liezeitsu, thus also putting an end to speculations that former chief minister Neiphiu Rio would replace Zeliang. Rio, currently lone Lok Sabha member from Nagaland was expelled from the NPF in May 2016 for his alleged anti-party activities, which became a “technical problem” in his attempt to get elected as the new chief minister.

Rio had on Saturday evening almost convinced majority of the NPF and Independent MLAs to back him during the crucial legislature party meetings of the DAN and NPF held in Kohima on Monday. But party leaders cited the “technical” problem that stood in Rio’s way, leading to a near-unanimous decision in favour of Shurhozelie Leizeitsu.

Eight times MLA, Shurhozelie however had not contested the 2013 assembly elections, and will now have to get elected through a by-election within six months. Chosen as the eleventh chief minister of Nagaland, Shurhozelie is also a noted litterateur and linguist who has Meanwhile, the Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) and Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) have decided to call of the indefinite bandh that they had imposed against government offices from February 6 demanding resignation of chief minister Zeliang. “We are calling off the indefinite bandh, but our other demands – suspension of former Dimapur Police Commissioner and amending the Nagaland Municipal Act so that the provision for 33 per cent women’s reservation which infringes upon Naga tradition and customs was removed,” a JCC spokesman said.

Akhilesh Yadav drags Amitabh Bachchan; ‘stop endorsing Gujarat’s donkeys’

Addressing an election rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday took a cheeky dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, who has been the brand ambassador of Gujarat tourism for a long period of time. Upping the ante on his political rivals, the UP Chief Minister said, “Ek gadhe ka vigyapan aata hai, main iss sadi ke sabse bade mahanayak se kahunge ke ab aap Gujarat ke gadhon ka prachar mat kariye (I would urge the Superstar of the Century-Amitabh-to stop advertising for donkeys of Gujarat).”

Akhilesh’s comments were in response to an advertisement of Gujarat tourism, which features many donkeys and actor Bachchan. The advertisment promotes the Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary located in the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat.

Meanwhile, over 61 per cent polling was recorded in the third phase of the ongoing UP assembly elections on Sunday. As many as 69 constituencies went to the polls, which is considered as crucial for the ruling Samajwadi Party. In the previous assembly polls, the SP had won 55 of these 69 seats, while the BSP, BJP and Congress had secured only six, five and two seats respectively. One seat was won by an Independent.

Mayawati defines Narendra Damodardas Modi as 'Mr Negative Dalit Man'

Hitting back at Narendra Modi for calling BSP as ‘Behenji Sampatti Party’, party chief Mayawati on Monday said the prime minister will get a tit-for-tat reply in Uttar Pradesh polls for his remark. Reacting to the statement, Maywati said the prime minister has compelled her to define Narendra Damodardas Modi as “Mr Negative Dalit Man”.

“Prime Minister doesn’t know BSP is a movement first and then a party. I didn’t get married, I didn’t desert anyone after marrying like Modi did. Instead spent my life for welfare of minorities especially Muslims,” said Mayawati. “Modi is defining BSP wrongfully…I dedicated my life for the poor, deprived and Dalits…they consider me as a big “sampatti’ (asset) for them,” she added.

At an election rally in Orai region of Jalaun in Bundelkhand region, earlier in the day, Modi attacked the BSP chief and said those who deposit wealth for themselves can never solve the problems of people. “Arrey Behenji discussion not because elections are being held but because you have deposited Rs 100 crore after note ban…BSP is no longer Bahujan Samaj Party…bahujan toh Mayawati me simat gaya hai…it is Behenji Sampatti Party now. Those who deposit wealth for themselves, can they solve your problem?” Modi had asked.

He also attacked the SP and Congress for criticising the demonestisation decision. “Where has Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) reached today…when I announced note ban on November 8 last year, arch-rivals SP and BSP, who never see eye-to-eye, came together…I was amazed when I launched war against corruption and asked for the details of blackmoney. They came together and all including the Congress started speaking the same language,” Modi said.
